Calzone
I do believe I have recently consumed the best food I have ever consumed in my entire life. Food of choice - a calzone.
My initial impressions when we decided on having dinner at "Diner" in Hill City, South Dakota was it was just another generic restaurant with sub-par food. I was completely wrong.
Diner, as it was simply called, was a 50s-themed restaurant with checkerboard walls and floor, and pictures of older popular celebrities on the walls, such as Elvis Presley and Marilyn Monroe. The waitress kindly took our order, I had been craving pizza, so I ended up settling for a "Meat-Eaters Speciatly Calzone." I hadn't had a calzone before within a memorable time frame, so I didn't really know what to expect, other than a folded over pizza.
The drinks before our meal came were honestly not very good, and didn't hype up the food much at all. (However, that could simply be because I'm pretty sure the water tastes different in South Dakota, haha.) But once my calzone was brought out to me, I was stunned.
The waitress walks up to the table holding what seems to be something one would cook a pizza in a stone oven on, holding this massive calzone, dressed to perfection, accompanied by a cup of marinara sauce. This had to at least have been a 12" diameter pizza, stuffed with cheese, pepperoni, sausage, bacon, and canadian bacon (ham), with slices on the top and covered in romano. It looked and smelled amazing. The sheer size of it lead me to believe I wouldn't possibly be able to finish the thing, but I was damn well going to try.
Like I said, i didn't really know what to expect from a calzone, so I started off by cutting off a small peice of the calzone, dipped one end into the marinara and took a bite. My eyes opened wide; this thing was absolutely delicious! I finished it off by taking much bigger slices, dipping in the marinara and consuming as quickly as I could. I left some outside crust separate to dip in the marinara once I finished the main of the calzone.
I ate the entire thing. I felt like I had just conquered the world, and the first words out of my mouth were: "That was the greatest thing I've ever eaten in my entire life!" Never before had I experienced such a delicious and filling pizza dish, or any kind of dish. I am amazed that a small, seemingly-generic diner (and cleverly named so, Diner) could produce a meal for me, one who is pretty critical of food, that completely filled me up and was delicious enough to leave me speechless.
Cheers to you, Diner of Hill City, South Dakota, for making such an amazing calzone (I might even grab a second before I leave) and for somehow indirectly causing me to write an entire page on calzones... Thank you..
